MISSION & PROGRAMS

OUR MISSION

We Explore Earth is a volunteer-powered 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to improving physical and mental well-being, strengthening communities, and protecting our public lands by making the outdoors accessible to everyone. Through free outdoor recreation, environmental education, conservation, and wellness experiences, we inspire people of all ages to become lifelong explorers and environmental stewards.

We believe nature should be welcoming, inclusive, and accessible to all. Every hike, cleanup, educational workshop, and community experience helps build healthier people, stronger communities, and a deeper connection with the natural world.

Programs & Projects

At We Explore Earth, we believe everyone deserves access to nature. Through more than 22 free community experiences each month, our programs & projects remove barriers to the outdoors while inspiring healthier lifestyles, stronger communities, and lifelong environmental stewardship. Learn more about our growing programs in the following section.

We Explore Earth Programs

Conservation & Restoration Projects: Protecting the places we love.

Our conservation initiatives bring volunteers together to restore habitats, remove invasive species, build and maintain trails, plant native vegetation, clean parks, beaches, rivers, and open spaces, and improve public lands. Every project creates lasting environmental impact while empowering community members to become active stewards of the outdoors.

Trails & Kids: Inspiring the next generation of explorers

Our family program introduces children and their parents to nature through fun, educational outdoor adventures. Families enjoy guided hikes, wildlife discovery, conservation activities, and hands-on environmental education while building lifelong memories and healthy outdoor lifestyles together

Guided Community Hikes: Explore. Learn. Connect

Our guided hikes introduce people of all ages and experience levels to Southern California’s mountains, forests, deserts, beaches, and public lands. Every experience is led by knowledgeable volunteer leaders who create welcoming spaces where participants can build confidence, friendships, and a deeper connection with nature.

Nature Education: Learning beyond the classroom.

Through bird walks, naturalist-led experiences, wildlife encounters, environmental workshops, Indigenous knowledge sharing, and hands-on educational programming, participants gain a deeper understanding of local ecosystems, biodiversity, and conservation while developing a lasting appreciation for the outdoors.

Outdoor Recreation & Wellness: Move, explore, and thrive together

Our outdoor recreation programs encourage healthy lifestyles through trail running, climbing experiences, wellness sessions, yoga, sound baths, community campouts, retreats, and other outdoor adventures that strengthen both physical and mental well-being. Whether participants are taking their first steps on a trail, climbing for the first time, or joining a weekend retreat, every experience is designed to build confidence, meaningful friendships, and a lifelong connection to nature.

Community Workshops: Learning practical outdoor skills

From herbal education and natural clothing dyeing to gardening, sustainability, outdoor cooking, and environmental leadership, our workshops provide practical skills while fostering creativity, resilience, and stronger community connections.

Earth Month: Building one of the largest community-driven Earth Month movements.

Each April, We Explore Earth coordinates dozens of free conservation projects, educational experiences, habitat restoration efforts, cleanups, and community events across Southern California. Thousands of volunteers come together to celebrate Earth Month by giving back to the places we all share.

Outdoor Innovation: Technology that inspires real-world exploration.

Launching in 2026/2027, our free UCLA-developed mobile app will connect people with outdoor experiences, conservation projects, educational resources, volunteer opportunities, and stewardship challenges. By gamifying participation in nature, we’re making it easier than ever to explore, learn, volunteer, and give back.
